We all need a little extra self care in winter. The cold weather and lack of sunlight hours can make life feel a lot harder, so here are 10 winter self care ideas to make this season a little easier.
Why Should You Be Practicing Self Care in Winter?
You should be practicing self care all year round, but it becomes more important than ever in winter. It’s not uncommon to feel less like yourself as the weather becomes colder, but the good news is that there are some lovely and cozy self care options for winter.
Practicing self care will remind you that you are a priority in your life. You deserve to be treated well, and that begins by treating yourself well.
10 Winter Self Care Ideas
1. Change Your Bedding to Something a Little Cozier
Consider switching out your usual linen bed sheets for some fluffy bedding. It’s the perfect way to wake up on cold, winter mornings, and it’s also perfect for those lazy winter movie marathons. Click here to get yourself a fluffy bedding set on Amazon.
2. Gratitude
Practicing gratitude is a powerful mood booster and can help you find things to look forward to, even during miserable winters.
If you’re feeling stressed or unhappy, try writing out 10 things you’re grateful for today. For best results you should do this daily.
3. Wake Up Earlier
One of the hardest parts of winter is the lack of daylight hours. As the mornings get colder and darker, it can be tempting to start laying in later and later. But getting enough daylight is important for your mental and physical health.
If your work schedule allows it, try waking up at or before sunrise each morning. This will maximize your sunlight hours and help increase your vitamin D intake.
4. Think About Your Goals For The Year
While winters can be miserable, they also bring about the start of a new year for many people. This gives you the opportunity to reflect on what went well for you this year, what didn’t go so well, and what you want to focus on next year.
Spend an hour or so reflecting in your journal and setting yourself some goals for the new year – you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.
5. Make Homemade Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is the perfect winter companion, and it’s super easy to make at home. You can use it to hydrate your dry, winter skin, add it to your baths for a relaxing night time experience, or add a few drops to your pillow when you’re struggling to sleep at night.

6. Unplug From Technology
Spending too much time on social media can make you feel stressed and overwhelmed. If you’ve been feeling anxious and on edge, try spending a day or an evening completely screen free.
7. Have a Lazy Day
Spend the entire day doing absolutely nothing, guilt-free. You’ve made it through another difficult year – you deserve it!
8. Spend Time Outside
You should try to get outside as much as you can during winter, even though it’s tempting to stay inside where it’s warm. Getting enough sunlight is important, and spending enough time outside is the easiest way to ensure this.
You can also invest in an SAD lamp if you’re worried about how much sunlight you get naturally.
9. Put Up Fairy Lights
Fairy lights are the perfect way to brighten up a dark evening. Spend an evening putting them up around your house before enjoying a cozy evening in with your new, ambient lighting.
10. Buy Yourself Flowers
Flowers aren’t just for spring, and you don’t have to wait for someone else to buy them for you. A beautiful bouquet of flowers will brighten up your home and your life, and quite frankly – you deserve it.
