5 Reasons I Love Mornings

I’ve always considered myself a night owl. I’ve struggled with insomnia my entire life, and as a child I would sometimes have to stay home from school because I hadn’t managed to get any sleep the night before.

Despite my struggles with sleep, I’ve always loved mornings. Even when my insomnia was at its worst and I wasn’t getting to sleep until 8am at best, my favourite time of day was still sunrise, when everyone else was asleep and I only had the birds outside to keep me company.

Nowadays I wake up naturally between 7am and 9am (read more about how I cured my insomnia here) and I love mornings more than ever. These are just a few of the reasons why I love mornings.

They’re peaceful

Modern life can be hectic to say the least. When you’re working full time in a busy city, it can be difficult to find any sense of peace.

But early mornings are an exception to this. Even if you live in a large city, the early hours are easily the most peaceful time of day. There’s something wonderful about being awake before the rest of the world, or going for an early morning walk before everyone leaves for work.

They’re time to myself

I love waking up an hour or two before I need to leave the house and just taking some time to myself. Often you’re not able to control what happens in your day – you can’t control what happens at work and you can’t predict who’s going to need things from you. But you can control how you spend your mornings.

Taking time for yourself is so important for your mental health, but if you’re a busy person it’s not always easy to find the time. By making your mornings your you time then you’re able to prioritise yourself before anything has the chance to get in your way.

They’re a new start

Everyone loves a new start. People often hype up a new year, or a new month, or a new week because new starts are great. But we don’t need to wait until January 1st – we get one every single morning.

Whatever happened yesterday doesn’t determine today, and we can just forget about it. I love going to sleep because it means I can forget about everything that’s on my mind and start again tomorrow. I love waking up on a new day, planning out my goals and just deciding that it’s going to be great.

They’re beautiful

Sunrises are beautiful, and even after the sun has risen there’s something wonderful about the way the light from the sun falls in the morning.

I’ve seen hundreds of sunrises, but they never get old. One that’s always stayed with me is when I was walking home at 5am after my first ever shift as a bartender. My body was exhausted, but when the sun started to come up I was completely overwhelmed by how beautiful it was. I was struggling with severe depression at the time, but for the first time in a long while I was just overwhelmed with happiness and couldn’t help but smile.

Coffee

Anybody who knows me knows that I love coffee. My favourite time of day is automatically any time I’m able to drink coffee. But unfortunately I have to limit myself to one a day due to anxiety, and I can only have it first thing in the morning due to insomnia.

Coffee is absolutely one of my favourite things about mornings. I love waking up, making myself a coffee and drinking it peacefully before I even start to think about work.

Those are just five things I love about mornings, but I’d love to hear from you! Are you an early bird or a night owl? Let me know in the comments.
